Facial Hair Friday, Week 5

18 Sep

Today’s facial hair feature has a bit of a spin. For it is not the facial hair alone, but the person who is rocking it that makes it note-worthy. Well, I don’t know that you’d call it a spin, but I got your attention didn’t I? You are dying to know the twist! Who is the latest stubble bearing bloke?!

After complaints that facial hair wasn't visible.

That’s right, it’s Jackie Chan. Jackie Chan can grow a mustache?! Apparently he can. I am just as shocked as you are. Well, don’t worry, you still have time for it to grow on you (no pun intended) as the movie that it will make its first appearance in won’t come out for another year. And the movie itself is another something you will probably need some time to digest: a reinvention of The Karate Kid! If you’ve been following the development of this film, which I’m sad to say I have, you’ll also know that for a while it was going to be a complete remake, with the same title and plot, though I’m sure the heart of the original would be lacking. However, director Harold Zwart (Pink Panther 2, Agent Cody Banks) and the heads of Columbia Pictures decided instead to make it a “reinvention” titled Kung Fu Kid. Phew. Now that we don’t have to worry about the complete butchering of Mr. Miyagi and the inevitable modernization of ’80s classics (“Text on, text off”), we can sit back and appreciate this film for what it really is:  the first time in the history of cinema that we have been graced by Jackie Chan facial hair (no, Kung Fu Panda doesn’t count).

Glad I was more of a 3 Ninjas kinda gal,
