Facial Hair Friday, Week 17

11 Dec

Who is the best Santa Claus ever?  I can’t say for sure.  There have been some great ones over the years.  But I would argue that one way you can judge them is by which one has the greatest beard.  That’s a very important factor.  Another piece of evidence one should consider is how cool the actor playing the part is.  That can change everything.  Would that help Tim Allen, or hurt him?  See?  You have to think about these things.  Well, after much thought about the coolness of different actors and, most importantly, the strength of their beards, I have decided on this week’s Facial Hair Friday.  He may not be the best Santa ever, but then again, he might.

Ed Asner has the beard. Thus, he is Santa Claus

Ladies and gentleman, I give you Ed Asner.  Just look at that beard.  It’s not curly or laying down on his chest.  It’s sticking out in every direction.  Maybe it’s the wind pushing it out as he flies his sleigh through the air.  Apparently, you don’t even need a coat in the North Pole when you have a massive beard like that keeping you warm.

But let’s not forget about the other, slightly less important factor.  How cool is Ed Asner?  Well, he very recently cemented his coolness by providing the voice for Carl Fredricksen in Up.  Doing voices for cartoons is always cool.  And Up is not the only show on Mr. Ed Asner’s voice acting resume.

J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man.

Hudson in Gargoyles.

Roland Daggett in Batman: The Animated Series

Granny Goodness in Justice League

Ed Wuncler in Boondocks

Cosgrove in Freakazoid!

Hoggish Greedly in Captain Planet and the Planeteers

I don’t think the man has missed a single cool cartoon.  From the 90’s on he was in basically every single one.  Plus, this man is a prominent member of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, which provides legal funds for comic book creators who are sued, usually over censorship issues.

So, we at Lara and the Reel Boy salute you Mr. Ed Asner.  You are a very cool man.  And you have had, at times, very cool facial hair.

now i want to watch Gargoyles,

david

Dude. Ed Asner is cool for more than just cartoons. He was the boss in the Mary Tyler Moore show!
