Two Movies To Be Excited About

5 Jul

In the past I have posted trailers for movies that I am extremely excited about.  In many cases,  these are also movies that I worry I will not be able to see in theaters.  At least for me, there is something magical about seeing a movie in the theater.  And I always want the option of seeing a movie for the first time time in that setting.  And with these two movies, I will be very upset if that option is not available to me.

Valhalla Rising

Space Battleship Yamato

The first poster is for a film called Valhalla Rising.  It follows a mute, one-eyed Norse warrior and a boy as they travel with a group of Christian Vikings in the year 1000AD.  Supposedly they are in search of a crusade.  So, what’s exciting about this movie?  It is directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, the director of Bronson.  It is about Vikings.  It stars Mads Mikkelsen (Flame & Citron, Casino Royale).  It is about Vikings.  It was filmed entirely in Scotland.  And it is about Vikings.

This movie looks amazing.  Mads Mikkelsen is one of my favorite actors working today, and I’m very excited to see him take a role that is entirely dependent on his actions.  His character is mute, so all of his emotion is down to what he shows us, and that’s very exciting to me.

Anyway, check this out:

Next, we have the the second poster.  In case you can’t read Japanese, this is for Space Battleship Yamato.  The live action adaptation of the very famous anime series.  The series was the first English translated Anime with a plot that required the episodes be shown in order.  You may remember it as Star Blazers, as that was how it was broadcast in United States.

In any case, it was groundbreaking and it has spawned many successful sequels and adaptations over the years.  The latest is a live action version that will follow the plot of the original 1974 series.  It is being directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who directed the very interesting and entertaining Returner in 2002.

Why is this exciting?  Its a live action version of Space Battleship Yamato!  Do you have any idea how long I’ve wanted to see a live action space battleship?  Now, I can!

Watch this!  Also, there is a weird thing where it shows these people in a little corner of the screen towards the end of the preview.  I don’t know who they are, and its kind of distracting, so try and ignore it.

still waiting for Yatterman to come out here,
