Facial Hair Friday, #66: THE KING LIVES

26 Oct

I grew up watching action films with my dad.  So, I have a very special place in my heart for the films of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, and many other fine actors.  This is especially true when it comes to 1980s action flicks.  Conan the Barbarian (1982) is, without a doubt, one of my favorite films of all time.  I went to see it on glorious 35mm this summer at the Alamo Drafthouse.  I own the soundtrack on vinyl (thanks to the wonderful Blake Palmer).  And I probably go back and watch it more than any other movie I own.

With that in mind, let’s look at some facial hair news concerning Arnold.

The above photo is of Arnold in the new film The Tomb.  It concerns Arnold and Sylvester Stallone’s attempts to break out of an escape proof prison that Stallone helped design.  It’s been a very long time since we’ve seen Arnold with any sort of facial hair.  It’s been even longer since we’ve seen him looking his actual age.  And it is awesome on both counts.

Even more exciting is the next little piece of news.  At the end of Conan the Barbarian we were teased with an epilogue comprised of an image of the old, bearded Conan sitting on the throne he had conquered through his many adventures.  It hinted that we would see this king in future films.  Instead we got the fun, but very silly Conan the Destroyer, and the promising, but ultimately quite flawed, Conan the Barbarian (2011).  But now it has been announced that we are finally going to get The Legend of Conan.  Apparently, the story will be about the final years of Conan the King, a man who knows he will go to Valhalla, but wants to go out with one final battle.

And Arnold Schwarzenegger will be playing Conan the King.  Hopefully, he’s as bearded in the new movie as he was in that epilogue.
